INTRODUCTION

Nigeria has an area of 923,766 square kilometers and an estimated population 0f 130 million with her capital in Abuja. The Government operates a 3-tier structure:  The Federal Government The State Government The Local Government  The official language is English. The main indigenous languages are: Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. The main religions are: Christianity, Islam and Traditional.

Electrical energy is supplied by:- Hydro -electric stations in Kanji, Jebba and Shiroro.

The currency is the Naira (N1.00 is equivalent to 100 kobo).  

Nigeria is situated between longitudes 3o and 4o and latitudes 4o and 14o.  It shares borders with Niger, Tchad, Republic of Benin, Cameroon and the Atlantic Ocean.  Land is in abundance in Nigeria for agricultural and commercial.  There are two basic seasons in Nigeria: the wet season, which lasts from April to October, and the dry season, which lasts from November till March. February-March is the hottest period of the year when temperature ranges from 33oC to 38oC. There are two broad vegetation types: forest and savannah.  Major grains, grasses, tubers, vegetable and cotton are produced in the savannah, while the rain forest supports timber production and forest development, production of cassava, fruit trees like citrus, oil palm, cocoa, and rubber.  Nigeria is endowed with significant agricultural, mineral, marine, forest resources and diverse food and cash crop production. Examples of the food crops are: cassava, maize, rice, yam, various beans and legumes, Soya, sorghum, ginger, onion, tomatoes, melons and vegetables. The main cash crops are cocoa, cotton, groundnut, oil palm and tuber.  Oil and gas are the most important minerals. They are exploited and produced in the Niger delta basin and offshore continental shelf and in the deep sea of the territorial water. Some of the non-oil minerals that have been identified and evaluated are: coal, iron-ore, gypsum, Kaolin, phosphate, limestone, marble, columbite, barite and gold.

The Niger enters the country in the northwest and flows southward through tropical rain forests and swamps to its delta in the Gulf of Guinea.
